Mit “Mittelerde: Schatten des Krieges” hat die Dreistigkeit der Publisher, laut Aussagen vieler Spieler, ihren neusten unrühmlichen Höhepunkt erreicht. „Die Publisher werden immer Dreister“, „Geldgeile Wichser“ und andere, oft schlimmere, Kommentare liest man überall in den Kommentaren im Neuland (Sprich: Internet).
Meine Frage an all diese „Gamer“: Wie ignorant kann man sein? Macht ihr einen Wettbewerb daraus? Bekommt der Sieger eine „Depp des Monats“ Trophäe?
Spiele zu produzieren kostet Geld.
Ja, oh Wunder, Spiele kosten sehr viel Geld! Allein ein 27-köpfiges Team kostet rund 140.000€ im Monat[1], darin sind noch nicht die Kosten für Marketing und das Personal beim Publisher. Damit dürfte “Elex” in seiner Entwicklung 4,5 bis 5 Millionen Euro kosten. Zuzüglich kommt mindestens nochmal derselbe Betrag für Marketing und PR hinzu.
Jetzt rechnet dies mal hoch auf ein Studio wie Ubisoft Montreal welches über 3.000 Mitarbeiter (durschnittlich arbeiten 400-600 Leute an einem Titel) besitzt[2]. Das sind, wenn wir hier mal von dem gleichen Pro-Kopf Gehalt wie bei Piranha Bytes ausgehen, weit über 10 Millionen Euro im Jahr. Allein für das Studio, ohne Verwaltung durch Ubisoft in Frankreich und ohne Marketing. Bei durchschnittlich 3 Jahren Entwicklungszeit, die oft für größere Titel üblich sind, kommen somit schnell mehrere Millionen Euro an reinen Personalkosten zusammen.
Alle wollen was verdienen
Diese Summe, zusammen mit den Marketingkosten, sowie den Herstellungskosten der physischen Version und den Serverkosten, muss jetzt reingeholt werden. Dazu verlangt man einen Ladenpreis von ungefähr 60€ bis 70€ für die Konsolenfassung. Hier geht im Schnitt entweder knapp 30% an das Geschäft, damit die ihre Leute bezahlen können oder an Valve, damit die Steam rund um die Uhr weltweit betreiben können. So bleiben knapp 40-49€ beim Publisher der damit seine Mitarbeiter bezahlen muss, sowie das Presswerk indem die Datenträger produziert wurden. Zuzüglich muss der Publisher damit die Server, Infrastruktur bezahlen sowie seine PR Agentur. Sony und Microsoft verlangen zusätzlich noch Gebühren um auf deren Plattformen zu veröffentlichen, sowie Kosten für das veröffentlichen von Patches. Neue Software, Entwicklerkonsolen und selbstverständlich Räumlichkeiten sowie Arbeitsmaterial müssen finanziert werden.
Bei einer Milchmädchenrechnung klingt alles nach viel Geld
12 Millionen verkaufte Einheiten klingen für “AC:4 Black Flag” erstmal nach einer ganzen Menge Geld (40€ x 12 Millionen Einheiten = 480 Millionen €). Doch leider kommen erschwerend noch viele weitere Faktoren hinzu: Keystores die teilweise mit gestohlenen Kreditkarten im großen Stil Spiele einkaufen[3]. Und natürlich werden die Spiele weltweit vertrieben und in vielen Ländern, so auch in Osteuropa und Russland, kosten die Spiele deutlich weniger, weswegen sich die Gewinnmarge deutlich schmälert.
Wie man sieht sind Spiele nicht immer wirklich lukrativ. Im besten Fall sind sie jedoch Gelddruckmaschinen für Millionen von Dollar. So konnte GTA V in den ersten 24h seine geschätzten 265 Millionen US-Dollar Kosten wieder reinholen und einen Umsatz von rund 800 Millionen US-Dollar generieren[4].
Mit geschätzen 265 Million Dollar Budget dürfte GTA V eines der teuersten Spiele aller Zeiten sein. Bei 3 Millarden US Dollar Umsatz dürfte Rockstar bei Red Dead Redemption 2 nochmal drauflegen.
Kosten explodieren
Die 265 Millionen Dollar wären noch vor einem Jahrzehnt unvorstellbar gewesen, doch die immer bessere Technik und zusätzlichen Features erfordern einen deutlich höheren Personalaufwand[5] und wir als Spieler sind mit daran schuld. Wir sind nicht zufrieden mit immer derselben Technik, wir wollen immer mehr, bessere Grafik, bessere Story und in Rennspielen/Sportspielen möglichst viele Lizenzen damit man ja viel Auswahl hat.
Die Kaufpreise steigen nicht wirklich
Sobald Publisher und Entwickler jedoch ihre Investition wiederhaben wollen wird kollektiv rumgeheult über diese „Scheiß Vorbestelleraktionen“, DLCs und Mikrotransaktionen im Singleplayer.
Egal wie, ihr meckert, spätestens wenn die Preise für Spiele nochmal um 10€ angehoben werden, werdet ihr auf Reddit einen Kleinkrieg starten wollen. Deswegen versucht man die Preiserhöhung zu vermeiden, auch weil für einige Leute 70€ beziehungsweiße dann 80€ eine Menge Geld sind.
Egal wie ihr es seht, die Spieleindustrie ist heutzutage eins: Eine Profitorientierte Industrie. Von Luft und Liebe füllt kein Entwickler seinen Kühlschrank und ohne vollen Kühlschrank gibt es keine Videospiele.
Ihr habt es in der Hand, aber nicht so wie ihr denkt!
Ja, wie so oft habt ihr in der Hand ob wir in Zukunft noch mehr Lootboxen und Mikrotransaktionen bekommen. Wenn ihr nicht anfangt endlich wieder zu Release und auch mal gute DLCs zu kaufen werden wir diesen Mist einfach weiter haben. Irgendwo muss der Publisher ja seinen durchaus berechtigten Gewinn machen und der muss einfach höher liegen als ein einstelliger Prozentsatz[6].
Mit eurem Geldbeutel könnt ihr also entscheiden ob ihr weiterhin solche grandiosen Titel wie: “Horizon Zero Dawn“, “The Last of Us” und “Mass Effect 2” spielen wollt.
Jedoch ist nicht jeder Titel ein Gewinn, ein Battleborn dürfte trotz guter Kritiken nicht wirklich profitabel für Gearbox gewesen sein, auch das hochgelobte Dead Space 2 war nicht rentabel[7]. Und ihr fragt euch immer noch wieso Dead Space 3 mehr in Richtung Mainstream und Action ging?
Als Beispiel: Open-World ist aktuell einer der beliebtesten Trends der Spieleindustrie. Klar oft sind Open-World Titel gut und bieten neben den Missionen oft viel zu entdecken, doch nicht immer geht die Rechnung auf. Mass Effect: Andromeda und Mafia 3 scheiterten krachend an den Herausforderungen. Trotzdem werden sie entwickelt, da Spieler immer wieder zurückkehren und im Multiplayer immer mal wieder Geld lassen[8].
Also Kauft und nicht nur im Steamsale
Wenn ihr nicht endlich wieder anfangt zu zeigen, dass wir bereit sind für gute Titel Geld auszugeben und nicht nur Open-World Titeln, (Gottbewahre) Sandbox-Survival (Sprich PUBG und Konsorten) oder Lootboxen mit Skins unser hartverdientes Geld hinterherwerfen, werden wir auch endlich wieder Spiele bekommen an die wir uns auch in Jahren noch erinnern. Oder erinnert ihr euch noch an eure ersten Matches eines neuen Call of Dutys, Battlefields oder PUBGs?
Ich behaupte mal NEIN, ihr erinnert euch aber noch daran wie ihr als junger Spyro eure versteinerten Freunde gerettet habt. Als ihr zum ersten Mal jemandem in Gothic „Volles Pfund aufs Maul“ gehauen habt oder ihr in Tomb Raider einem T-Rex gegenüberstandet.
Kauft mehr Videospiele und sichert euch Erinnerungen für die Zukunft, damit wir auch in 20 Jahren noch von super Story Erlebnissen reden und nicht was wir cooles aus einer gekauften Lootbox gezogen haben. Egal wie cool sowas auf Twitch rüberkommt, nichts beleibt einem besser in Erinnerung als unerwartete Handlungen und skurrile Missionen.
