Es war mal wieder soweit! Die E3 hat im sonnigen Kalifornien stattgefunden und uns wieder mit frischem Futter für dieses und nächstes Jahr versorgt.
Highlights waren die Xbox One X, Star Wars Battlefront II, Far Cry 5, Beyond Good and Evil und noch einige Dinge mehr. Doch was mir persönlich am wichtigsten war: Was ist mit VR?
Zunächst einmal müssen wir uns anschauen was im letzten Jahr, seit der E3 2016, in der VR-Branche geschehen ist. Es sind nicht gerade große bekannte Titel für die VR-Technologie erschienen.
Das bekannteste Genre, welches ein VR-Spiel verpasst bekam war Resident Evil mit Resident Evil 7 Biohazard. Zwar gab es noch Titel wie „Batman: Arkham VR“ oder „Star Trek: Bridge Crew“, jedoch haben diese Titel nicht besonders stark eingeschlagen.
Die VR-Technologie spielte also im vergangenen Gaming-Jahr keine allzu große Rolle.
Aber wieso war das so?
Ein wesentlicher Punkt sind die enormen Kosten die mit der Produktion eines neuen Spieles verbunden sind. Zum Beispiel wurden dem Entwicklerstudio Bungie ganze 140 Mio.$ für die Entwicklung von Destiny, vom Publisher Activision, zur Verfügung gestellt.
Wir sind uns ja alle im Klaren darüber, dass Studios und Publisher nicht die Wohlfahrt sind und die Spiele nicht nur Kostendeckend produzieren können, sondern auch einen Gewinn einfahren müssen, neben denn Kosten für Programmierer oder Autoren.
Das ist auch gut so, denn wie sollten diese Studios sonst wachsen und uns mit noch mehr guten Spielen versorgen?
Und hier liegt auch das Problem, denn der Gamingmarkt für die VR-Technologie ist immer noch ein Nischenmarkt. Er entwickelt sich zwar seit dem letzten Jahr immer weiter und wächst, aber die Kosten für die Entwicklung von VR-Spielen sind immer noch sehr hoch im Vergleich zu dem Verkaufspotential dieser Nische.
Aber wir sehen, zum Glück, dass sich die Entwickler immer wieder Dinge einfallen lassen, um diesen Markt langsam interessanter zu machen und so dafür zu sorgen, dass sich mehr Menschen eine VR-Brille zulegen. Denn wenn erstmal die Verkaufszahlen für VR-Brillen in die Höhe steigen, dann werden wir auch mehr AAA-Spiele in VR sehen.
Nun zu diesem Jahr:
Wie schon erwähnt, lassen sich die Entwickler einiges einfallen. Dieses Jahr auf der E3 gab es direkt drei Paukenschläge von Bethesda. Sowohl ihr Zugpferd The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, als auch Doom 3 und Fallout 4 werden in VR erscheinen!
Zuerst sträubte sich ein Teil von mir dagegen und war enttäuscht, dass Skyrim anscheinend schon wieder aufgewärmt wird. Dies ist aber nur zum Teil der Fall.
Bethesda nutzt hier die Möglichkeit, das VR-Genre durch die Einbindung eines der besten Spiele die es bisher überhaupt gibt zu vergrößern. Es wird nicht wenige Menschen geben die unbedingt dieses einmalige Spielerlebnis, welches ein VR-Spiel bietet, mit Skyrim erleben zu können. Gleiches gilt hier für DOOM oder Fallout.
Leider hörte man in diesem Jahr erneut von Microsoft kein Wort über Virtual Reality. Es scheint das sich Microsoft mit der XBOX One X nun in eine andere Richtung bewegt und sich in Zukunft zwei unterschiedliche Spezialisierungen auf dem Konsolen-Markt finden werden. Einmal die Playstation die vermehrt auf VR-Titel setzen wird und auf der anderen Seite die XBOX, welche eher der 4K-Graphik entgegen streben wird.
Aber es wurden tatsächlich auch neue Spiele für das VR-Genre angekündigt. Leider sind dabei keine AAA-Titel. Das zeigt einmal mehr, dass sich das VR-Gerne noch in der Entwicklung befindet und erst in den nächsten Jahren vollständig aufblühen wird. Dann werden wir auch größere Spiele bekommen, die primär für VR programmiert werden.
Ich bin auf jeden Fall gespannt, was in den nächsten Jahren auf das VR-Genre zukommt und hoffe gleichzeitig, dass es keine Modeerscheinung war.
Es ist noch so unfassbar vieles mit VR möglich und ich bin zuversichtlich, dass bestimmte Entwickler so einige großartige Kunstwerke aus dieser Technologie heraus kitzeln können.
Wenn die Studios und Publisher in der VR-Branche Potential sehen, dann kann daraus großes enstehen.
