Wer sich etwas über die Spieleindustrie informiert, der sollte schon vom Fall Vivendi gegen Ubisoft gehört haben. Es geht um den französischen Medienkonzern Vivendi, welcher Aktienanteile des Spielekonzerns Ubisoft kauft und somit versucht Ubisoft zu übernehmen. Doch warum versucht Vivendi so vehement Ubisoft zu übernehmen? Und warum könnte sich dies negativ für uns Spieler auswirken?
Die Partnerschaft
Um die Ursprünge dieses Konfliktes zu erklären, müssen wir etwas in die Zeit zurück reisen. In den 2000er Jahren waren Activision und Vivendi Games zwei unabhängige Spielepublisher, welche miteinander noch konkurrierten. Beide waren eines der größten Spielepublisher der damaligen Zeit. Vivendi Games besaß Studios, wie Blizzard- und Sierra Entertainment. Activision hingegen besaß das Studio Infinity Ward und hatte mehrere Markenrechte an Titeln, wie zum Beispiel Call of Duty, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro und der Wolfenstein-Reihe.
Dies änderte sich 2007, als Vivendi Games und Activision zusammen fusionierten und somit zu Activision Blizzard wurden. Man wollte mit dieser Fusion zum stärksten Spielepublisher der Welt aufsteigen und somit Electronic Arts, als größten Vertreiber von Spiele-Software überholen. Allerdings sicherte sich Vivendi Aktienanteile von bis zu 68%. Faktisch gesehen gehörte Activision/Blizzard somit Vivendi.
In dieser Zeit fokussierte sich Activision/Blizzard fast ausschließlich auf die erfolgreichsten Spiele des Unternehmens. Call of Duty wurde zu einer alljährlichen Marke mit relativ wenig Neuerungen. Und World of Warcraft bekommt nun alle paar Jahre ein neues Addon spendiert. Ebenso wurden Starcraft 2 und Diablo 3 in dieser Zeit veröffentlicht. Doch es ist generell die Zeit, wo das Unternehmen wenig in neue Marken investiert und lieber Erfolgreiche Spiele weiter veröffentlicht, damit die Umsätze stimmen. Und tatsächlich konnte das Unternehmen konnte zu dieser Zeit Rekordumsätze erreichen, allerdings auf Kosten der Innovation ihrer Spiele.
Das Ende
Mitte 2013 war Vivendi hochverschuldet und musste Geld auftreiben. Man verkaufte einige Anteile von Activision/Blizzard und spülte somit 6,2 Mrd. Euro ein. Allerdings behielt Vivendi noch einen Anteil von 12%. Mai 2014 waren es dann nur noch 5,8%. Schließlich verkaufte Vivendi im Januar 2016 auch ihre letzten Anteile und war von nun an nicht mehr an Activision/Blizzard beteiligt.
Wer allerdings am meisten von dieser Sache profitierte war Activision/Blizzard selbst, denn das Unternehmen strebte schon lange seine Unabhängigkeit von Vivendi an. Ironischer weise waren es sogar Aktionäre von Activision/Blizzard selbst, wie der CEO Bobby Kotick, die die Aktion von Vivendi abkauften.
Bobby Kotick, CEO von Activision/Blizzard, war sehr erfreut, als das Unternehmen sich von Vivendi loslösen konnte und somit ihre Unabhängigkeit zurückerlangte.
Vivendi hatte sich somit Anfang 2016 aus der Videospielindustrie komplett zurückgezogen. Doch Vivendi wartete nicht lange und suchte nach einem neuen Unternehmen, um wieder ins Videospielgeschäft einzusteigen.
Die feindliche Übernahme
Vivendi hatte sich für gut ein halbes Jahr aus der Videospielindustrie komplett zurückgezogen. Aber schon im Juni 2016 kam Vivendi zurück und begann das Spieleimperium der Brüder Michel und Yves Guillemot anzugreifen. Es begann zunächst mit der feindlichen Übernahme Gamelofts, durch Vivendi. Gameloft ist eines der Weltweiten Marktführer im Mobilegaming Sektor und der größte Videospielentwickler für Mobiltelefone. Vivendi sicherte sich mit einem Schlag bis zu 61,7% der Anteile an Gameloft. Somit gehört Gameloft nun Vivendi.
Doch es bleibt nicht nur bei der Übernahme von Gameloft, sondern Vivendi strebt die komplette Übernahme von Ubisoft an. Am 29. September hatte Vivendi die Chance Ubisoft mit einem Schlag komplett zu übernehmen. Ubisoft allerdings konnte die feindliche Übernahme abwehren, da Yves Guillemot Ubisoftfreundliche Investoren finden, welche ebenfalls Ubisoft Aktien kauften. Ubisoft konnte somit vorerst seine Unabhängigkeit bewahren. Doch die eigentliche Frage ist, für wie lange? Denn Vivendi hat schon angekündigt, dass sie spätestens Ende 2017, Ubisoft komplett übernommen haben.
Die Absicht Vivendis
Doch warum will nun Vivendi unbedingt Ubisoft übernehmen? Vivendi scheint wohl mit dem Verlust der Activision/Blizzard Anteile nicht klar zu kommen, weshalb sie sich nun entschieden haben Ubisoft zu übernehmen. Mit der Übernahme Ubisofts würde Vivendi (wiedermal) eines der Weltgrößten Publisher der Videospielindustrie werden. Die momentane Situation ähnelt sehr stark, der Situation wie vor 10 Jahren, als Vivendi die Fusion mit Activision einging, um der Weltgrüßte Publisher zu werden.
Doch was hat dies mit uns zu tun? Ganz ehrlich? Eine Menge meiner Meinung nach! Ubisoft ist der letzte große Entwickler, der gerne mal Risikos eingeht und in Videospiele investiert, welche womöglich nicht erfolgreicher werden, als das Xte Assassins Creed. Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon, um mal als ein Paradebeispiel zu nennen. Oder die ganzen schönen kleineren Spiele, wie Rayman, Ori and the Blind Forest oder Valiant Hearts, welche unter Vivendi niemals möglich wären!
Während der E3 diesen Jahres spürte man die Angst Ubisofts. Nun ruft das Unternehmen zu mehr Solidarität auf, um sich gegen Vivendi zu behaupten.
Aber auch die Triple A Marken würde diese Übernahme zu spüren bekommen. Denn Vivendi würde dafür sorgen, dass gefälligst jedes Jahr ein neues Assassins Creed und Far Cry erscheint, weil die Leute es wie Call of Duty und World of Warcraft kaufen und vorbestellen würden, ohne darüber nachzudenken.
Fazit
Macht euch bitte klar, dass dies keine einfache Übernahme eines Konzerns ist und dies euch nichts angehen würde. Natürlich hat Ubisoft die letzten Jahre (zurecht) viel Kritik abbekommen, allerdings solltet ihr euch wie gesagt klar machen, wie die Zukunft dieses Konzernes aussehen würde, wenn auf der Verpackung nun Vivendi drauf stehen würde! Aber so wie ich die Industrie kenne, wird es niemanden interessieren, bis es zu spät ist. Dann ist das geheule wieder groß, warum die Spiele immer gleich bleiben. Aber dieses mal zählt euer geheule nicht, wenn ihr jetzt nichts tut. In diesem Sinne, seid vorgewarnt!
