Herzlich willkommen zu unserer neuen Rubrik „Sneak Reviewer“. In dieser Rubrik werdet ihr alles zu den neusten Filmen, die im Kino als „Sneak Review“ angeteasert und gezeigt werden, erfahren. Dadurch erhaltet ihr wichtige Infos, welchen Film ihr euch gerne im Kino anschauen könnt oder welche ihr lieber gleich im Regal vergammeln lässt. Heute geht es um den Film Berlin Syndrome, welcher sowohl ideenlos, als auch langweilig wirkt. Ich erkläre euch woran dies liegen könnte und warum er ein Abklatsch von Stanley Kubricks Meisterwerk The Shining ist.
Die Regisseurin Cate Shortland versucht mit ihrem neuen Film „Berlin Syndrome“ uns einen Einblick in die menschliche Psyche zu geben, bzw. in die Psyche zweier Charaktere. Da gibt es einmal unsere Hauptprotagonistin des Filmes Clare (Teresa Palmer), welche aus Australien kommt und ein Auslandsjahr in unserer Bundeshauptstadt Berlin macht. Sie wirkt sehr, wie ein typisches Mädchen der „Generation Y“, sprich sie ist Zuhause unzufrieden gewesen, weswegen sie nun versucht im Ausland sich selbst zu finden.
Enttäuschende Story
Eines Tages lernt sie den deutschen Englischlehrer Andi (Max Riemelt) kennen, welcher unser zweiter wichtiger Charakter ist. Clare steigt mit Andi ins Bett und scheint dabei einiges an Spaß zu haben. Doch schon am nächsten Morgen zeigt sich Andis wahres Gesicht. Er sperrt nämlich Clare in eine Wohnung, welche in einem verlassenen Wohnblock in Berlin Kreuzberg ist, ein. Nun kommt es zur Visualisierung der Psyche beider Charaktere, welche sich im Laufe der Handlung verändert.
Soweit so gut und eigentlich interessant, denn man muss sagen, dass der Film in Punkto Story eigentlich eine Menge Potenzial bietet. Allerdings schöpft man dieses Potenzial nicht aus, stattdessen liefert der Film uns mehr eine Beobachtung der Charakter, bzw. Shortland nennt es „Panorama“.
Max Riemelt, bekannt aus dem Film „Die Welle“, spielt hier einen psychisch kranken Lehrer.
Ehrlich gesagt ist der Film eine absolute Enttäuschung, denn wie gesagt ist der Film mehr eine Beobachtung der beiden Charaktere und keine Visualisierung. Gemeint ist, dass die Charaktere im Kino total hölzern wirken und unrealistisch agieren. Dies mag zwar im Deckmantel der Psyche sein, aber gute Charakterzeichung ist was Anderes. Vor allem Andi ist wirklich zutiefst enttäuschend, denn zu seiner Figur wird fast im ganzen Film geschwiegen! Es wird nicht gesagt, warum er diese schlechte Tat begeht, wie er so geworden ist oder irgendeine andere Erklärung, wodurch seine Figur erklärt werden könnte, wird nicht geliefert. Stattdessen ist er einfach nur Böse. Punkt! Dieser Aspekt ist deshalb so enttäuschen, weil genau dieser Aspekt das Interessante an einem Bösewicht ist. Man möchte als Zuschauer verstehen, wie und warum jemand so psychisch krank sein kann oder eben geworden ist. Filme wie „American Psycho“ oder „The Shining“ sind hier als perfektes Beispiel zu nennen. Niemand möchte mehr bei solchen Filmen einfach nur schwarz/ weiß Charaktere sehen, sondern will eben über diese mehr erfahren.
Gähnende Langeweile
Aber nicht nur die Charaktere sind ein großes Problem für den Film, sondern eben auch die Filmlänge, mal wieder! Dieser Film dauert an die 112 Minuten, welche viel zu lang sind für solch einen Film! Die Handlung ist dünner, als ein Reclam Buch von Lenz und kommt einfach nicht in die Pötte. Der Film braucht fast 30 Minuten, um überhaupt erst richtig anzufangen und auch dann wird es nicht besser. Der Film verwendet in so vielen Szenen Slow Motion, egal ob sie nun angebracht ist oder eben nicht, Hauptsache sie zieht den Film weiter in die Länge. Michael Bay wäre stolz gewesen.
Vor allem gibt es aber auch Szenen im Film, welche völlig sinnlos oder gar nicht zur Handlung gerade passen. Man fragt sich, warum diese Szenen drin sind, denn sie bringen die Handlung nicht weiter oder sind nicht sagend. Die Szenen in denen Andi mit seinem Vater, über die DDR und gescheiterte Träume sprechen sind so banal und nichtssagend, dass meine Freunde und ich bis heute diese Szenen nicht verstanden haben. Irgendwann reißt einem dann auch der Geduld Faden und man ist froh, endlich den Kinosaal verlassen zu dürfen.
Teresa Palmer und Max Riemelt sind ein Paar sondergleichen, leider auch langweilig sondergleichen.
Fazit
Zu guter Letzt auch noch ein kleiner Kommentar zur Handlung, denn diese ist zumeist auch nur hanebüchener Käse und Mumpitz. Clare versucht ständig auszubrechen, schafft es (oh Wunder) meistens nicht und am Ende wird dieser Film immer mehr und mehr zu Stanley Kubricks altem Meisterwerk „The Shining“. Es gibt sogar eine Szene, welche fast eins zu eins von Shining einfach gemobbst und übertragen wurde. Der Film wirkt somit dann halt mehr, wie eine schlechte Kopie des alten Klassikers und weniger, wie eine Neuinterpretation eines Psychothrillers.
Schade eigentlich, denn ich hätte mir gewünscht mehr daraus zu machen, weil es in diesem Genre viel zu holen gibt. Beziehungsweise es gibt hier viel Potenzial für Filme die mal etwas Neues wagen wollen. Berlin Syndrome gehört nicht dazu und ist bei mir am Ende aufgrund, der schlechten Charaktere, der zu oft eingesetzten Slow Motion, der zu banalen Handlung und der zu krassen Länge des Filmes bei mir total durchgefallen.
3.5/10 – Prädikat: Ziemlicher Käse und ein zu langes hin und her Theater mit der Psyche. Lasst die Finger von diesem Film, es sei denn ihr wollt einen langweiligen DVD Abend.
